CHALLENGES AND INTERVENTIONS IN CHILDREN SUFFERING FROM AUTISM AND DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER

Abstract: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder [ASD] often experience significant difficulties in social communication, which become even more challenging when compounded by comorbid conditions like cancer. Sensory sensitivities, communication barriers, and a strong preference for routine make hospital environments distressing, leading to heightened anxiety and stress. A cancer diagnosis introduces additional disruptions, requiring frequent interactions with unfamiliar medical personnel in over stimulating clinical settings. This review explores current strategies employed to ease social anxiety in children coping with both ASD and cancer. Traditional approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy [CBT], social skills training, and support from child life specialists remain integral. Concurrently, emerging interventions—including virtual reality therapy, artificial intelligence tools for emotion recognition, and interactive social learning platforms—are enhancing personalized support. Creating sensory-friendly hospital environments and involving multidisciplinary teams comprising pediatric oncologists, psychologists, occupational therapists, and educators are critical for providing holistic care tailored to each child’s unique needs. Moving forward, integrating technological innovations with early screening holds promise for strengthening psychological resilience and improving treatment outcomes in this vulnerable population.
